Shiraz was sentenced for 10 months (including the time he has been in prison). After that he’ll be facing immigration charges that result from this very case.
In the sentencing on May 17th, his attorney argued repeatedly that the law that requires non-immigrant visa holders not to possess a firearm was not a long one and told the judge that he had spoken to numerous lawyers in town who were completely unaware of this change. Students coming to the country are not informed of such laws. However the prosecutors kept pressing that the law has been in effect and they wanted to set an example by punishing that they are very “serious” about enforcing such laws.
The prosecutors also acknowledged that there was no evidence to suggest that Shiraz had any links or plans for jihad. But they argued that he had been with people who have been charged with training for jihad. (Kobie had pleaded guilty last Nov. after a deal with federal prosecutors while Adnan’s trial is yet to begin. He’s not been convicted of any charges. His trial is set to begin in October this year.
